Gold closes higher as hot CPI lifts Fed hike bets
Spot gold ended at $4,362.15, up 1.04%, after US inflation headlines lifted Fed hike expectations but failed to knock bullion lower.
Spot gold ended the 11 September session at $4,362.15 per troy ounce, up $45.03, or 1.04%, according to XAUTicker, after trading between $4,298.30 and $4,401.99. The move left bullion above the previous close of $4,317.12 as US hours absorbed another wave of inflation and Federal Reserve headlines. Silver also rose on XAUTicker, trading at $64.44 per troy ounce, up 1.35%, with the gold/silver ratio at 67.7.

Gold absorbs the rate shock
The central point of the US session was resilience. GoldSilver said Fed hike odds had hit 90% and that gold ‘didn't care’, while FXStreet said gold rallied despite stronger Fed rate-hike expectations following US CPI. Kitco put the move down to dip buying as Fed hike bets rose after the inflation data. TradersUnion supplied a separate explanation, saying an escalation in the Middle East war had lifted safe-haven demand for gold. Taken together, the headlines framed a market that absorbed a more hawkish rate narrative without giving back the session’s gain.
Inflation keeps Fed pressure high
Inflation was the driver behind the rate discussion. Ratopati reported US consumer inflation at 3.4% in August and said a Fed rate hike was expected. PBS said US inflation accelerated as gas prices spiked, squeezing Americans’ finances, while 조선일보 said August CPI was up 3.4% and core inflation topped forecasts. Reuters reported that the Fed rate-hike case was building as inflation failed to cool. The New York Times said elevated inflation kept pressure on the Fed to raise interest rates, and Politico said Warsh faced new pressure to hike after inflation heated up.

FOMC countdown dominates
Several headlines put the Fed meeting itself at the centre of the next market test. 24/7 Wall St. said odds of a Fed hike had surged to over 85% with five days to the next FOMC meeting, and Crypto Briefing said hike odds had risen to 90% after core inflation surprised to the upside. ING Think said sticky US inflation justified a Fed hike, while another ING Think headline described the Fed as set to hike 25bp in a recalibration move. Newsweek, from another angle, said experts predicted no Fed rate cut next week.

Cross-market signals diverge
Outside gold, the headlines showed risk assets were not moving in only one direction. Bitcoin Magazine said bitcoin spiked and shrugged off hot US inflation data, while Devdiscourse said the US stock market ended a rough week on a high despite inflation concerns. Another Devdiscourse headline pointed to a dollar climb despite inflation battles and oil price surges. In the gold market, BullionVault said gold rebounded as US inflation data cooled record-high real rates, and ETFdb described gold’s summer surge as fuelled by the debasement trade.
