XAUTicker put spot gold at $4,146.45 per troy ounce late in the session, down $12.00, or 0.29%, from the previous close of $4,158.44. The feed showed a tight session range of $4,146.34 to $4,148.80. That left gold softer by the US close after BullionVault, Forbes and Kitco had earlier described rebounds linked to sinking tech stocks, lower Treasury yields and a weaker dollar.

US rebound loses traction into the close

The evening price settled below several earlier headline levels. TradingNEWS said gold held $4,148 as a hot 6.3% PPI reading sent yields lower, while Kitco said gold hit $4,154 after retail sales rose 0.8% in September. USAGOLD put physical gold at $4,176 as hot PPI fuelled an inflation-hedge bid. By the late feed, however, XAUTicker showed spot gold at $4,146.45, leaving the session down despite those rebound headlines. Forbes said gold rebounded from losses amid a tech stock selloff, and BullionVault said gold rallied while silver did not as tech stocks sank with bond yields.

Inflation and rates dominated the narrative

Kitco’s morning headlines framed the macro mix around hot inflation and softer rates pressure, saying gold held overnight gains above $4,100 even as US PPI rose 6.3% in September, and later saying gold and silver rebounded as Treasury yields tumbled despite hot PPI. The Korea Times said a tech selloff rolled on as hot inflation data stoked rate worries, while Kuwait Times said hot US inflation triggered an Asian tech stock rout. Kitco also said gold rebounded on a weaker dollar and yields, with October Fed hike bets subdued. FXEmpire similarly linked a rebound to a softer dollar after hot CPI.

Data headlines added cross-currents

Kitco reported several data points through the session without one simple market message. It said spot gold was near highs after the New York manufacturing index rose to 25.5, while another Kitco headline said spot gold was near highs after the Philly Fed survey fell to 20.9 in October. Kitco also said gold held its ground as the US labor market remained steady. InvestingLive said gold whipsawed after US CPI as the data fell short of bringing an October rate hike back into play. Together, those headlines pointed to a market trading around inflation, activity and Fed expectations rather than one single trigger.

Demand headlines stayed supportive

Beyond the day’s US data, several headlines focused on investment and official-sector demand. XTB.com said central banks bought the most gold in nearly two years, while BigGo Finance said central banks bought 63 tons of gold in September, the most in two years. Moomoo cited World Gold Council provisional data for September at a two-year high and asked whether official purchases could be sustained. The World Gold Council highlighted strong official gold buying in China’s third quarter, and The Financial Express said $31 billion of gold ETF inflows hit a record despite a September price slump. Shanghai Metals Market flagged Zambia’s planned gold ETF as a new route to gold investment.

Silver underperforms late

XAUTicker put spot silver at $56.86 per troy ounce, down 3.91%, and the gold/silver ratio at 72.9. That late move contrasted with some earlier precious-metals headlines. USAGOLD said silver rebounded 2%, and Kitco’s AM report said gold and silver rebounded as Treasury yields tumbled despite hot PPI. BullionVault had already drawn a distinction, saying gold rallied but silver did not as tech stocks sank with bond yields. By the close, the supplied prices showed that silver had a weaker session than gold.

What to watch

  • Kitco’s framing of October Fed hike bets after hot inflation headlines.
  • Whether silver keeps diverging from gold after BullionVault’s gold-silver split.
  • Further official-buying headlines from World Gold Council, XTB.com and BigGo Finance.
  • Any follow-through in ETF demand after The Financial Express’s $31 billion inflow headline.
