Kitco close: an oil rebound and 5.24% yields cap gold after Monday’s high

Gold and silver gave back Monday’s gains by the close as Brent rose 1.8% to $106.65 and Fed hike risk outweighed Middle East haven demand. Kitco’s levels into Wednesday’s CPI.

Monday started with gold above $4,200 and ended with it below. After the close, spot gold was near $4,168.90, down 0.59%, and silver at $60.12, down 0.96%, according to Kitco’s PM report. The turn came from the same place Monday’s early gains did: oil.

When oil stops helping gold

On Monday morning, softer oil helped gold by easing inflation worries. By the close, oil had reversed: Kitco reports Brent settled up 1.8% at $106.65 a barrel and WTI up 2.1% at $93.74. Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and between the US and Iran should, on the face of it, have sent investors into gold. Instead, a firmer dollar, stronger oil and the risk of higher yields outweighed that haven demand.

The reason is the Federal Reserve. Higher oil feeds into inflation, inflation feeds into the odds of another rate hike, and those odds feed into yields. Kitco cites CME FedWatch at about 17% for an October hike and 87.7% for at least one hike by December. In this market, an oil shock reaches gold through interest rates first and fear second. The 10-year Treasury yield was last around 5.24%, Kitco notes, on a day when the US cash bond market was shut for a holiday.

Kitco’s map into CPI

These are Kitco’s levels — reference points traders watch, not forecasts:

MetalResistanceSupport
Gold$4,220.89–$4,226.82, then $4,271.57 and $4,311.17$4,175.03, then $4,154.99
Silver$61.50–$61.72, then $63.06 and $65.09$59.96, then $59.82

As reported by Kitco News, 12 October 2026. Elsewhere in the same report Kitco gives $58.74 and $57.64 as silver’s lower targets.

Kitco also quotes David Morrison of Trade Nation, who still sees major support around $4,000. FXEmpire’s map, which uses many of the same numbers, is in $4,175 gold, $59.96 silver.

When Treasury supply stops being only a headwind

There is a twist in the yield story. Kitco notes the 10-, 20- and 30-year Treasury yields at 5.24%, 5.65% and 5.60%, and reads that as investors in long bonds demanding more compensation for inflation risk, supply risk and fiscal risk. In its words, US debt issuance, “not only Fed policy, is now part of the real-rate headwind for gold.” But analysts it cites add the other side: if investors come to see the fiscal path as a debasement risk, the same worry “could eventually become more supportive for bullion.”

The World Gold Council has floated a similar link, tentatively, for UK investors and rising term premia — we explain it in Gold as a hedge against government debt. It is one reason gold has held near $4,200 with the 10-year yield above 5%.
