Gold stuck near $4,150: a softer dollar meets 90% December hike odds
Gold drifted around $4,150 for a third session ahead of US CPI as a retreating dollar ran into near-90% odds of a December Fed hike. FXStreet’s Fibonacci floor and the levels bulls need to reclaim.
Gold hovered around $4,150 into the European morning on Wednesday, FXStreet reports. An earlier version of the same report, filed at 04:09 GMT, had gold ticking higher and holding above $4,150; the later version describes a market struggling to make headway. On paper it had help: the US dollar drifted lower for a second day, retreating from its highest level since April 2025. In practice, that help was outweighed by the Federal Reserve.
Why the dollar alone isn’t enough
A weaker dollar makes gold cheaper for buyers using other currencies, and on most days that supports the price. But FXStreet notes that CME FedWatch shows nearly 90% odds of a December rate hike. Those odds have been driven largely by energy prices — oil and gasoline pushing headline inflation up — and as long as they stay that high, they cap any rally the dollar might otherwise allow. The energy side of the story is in our CPI preview.
A crowded calendar
CPI is only the first of three tests this week. After today’s inflation report come producer prices on Thursday, and then a speech by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok on Friday. If CPI leaves the December question open, Warsh’s tone could settle it either way.

Fibonacci levels mark out how much of a previous move the price has retraced; the 78.6% level is the last of the commonly watched ones, which is why a break below it would point toward the prior low. FXStreet adds that momentum indicators are neutral rather than bearish: the MACD is still negative but its histogram is shrinking, and the RSI sits around 50 — the picture of a market consolidating rather than trending.
Kitco’s overnight map, with first gold support at $4,155.31, is in Kitco close: silver slumps 1.8%. For the current price, see the live gold price.
